"A story of journeys and separations, Not Just a Dog resonates with hope, redemption, and loyalty. Like all the best ones, this book can’t easily be categorized in a genre as it is an adventure story, a mother-daughter story, and, ultimately, more proof that we just don’t deserve dogs. Laura Thomas’s newest novel is a lovely tribute to the families we’re born with and the families we find."

-Marshall Highet, author of Blue-Eyed Slave (2022). You can find her at The Other Side of the Fire

"A magical, emotional and at times harrowing adventure, guided by the power unconditional love."

-Andy Mitchell, Director and Writer of the Emmy-Award-Winning documentary series, Secrets of the Whales

“The perfect book for the young, budding veterinarian or animal lover, with an important message to teach about animal welfare and kindness towards all things dog...”

 - Dr. Justine Lee, DACVECC, DABT, Author of "It's a Dog's Life... but It's Your Carpet"

“Laura pens a wonderful tale here where Ruffer, Jada and Slobber show the power and importance of friendship, courage, listening and ethics—lessons all youngsters can benefit from learning as early as possible.”

- Will Draper, DVM, Host of Nat Geo WILD's Animal ER Live

"I adored this surprising story for the beauty it reveals in toughness and grit, in pure distaste for the norm, and in the unpredictable paths carved out by love. Shimmering with tactile pleasure in a paradoxically repulsive underground world, the writing produces the visceral pleasure of travel with the bonus-thrill of a Goonies adventure...Thrilling, with a great ending."

- Lindsay Sterling, chef and author of Immigrant Kitchens

REVIEWS

"With ease and creativity, Laura draws us deeply into this dark tale of counter-culture hermits intentionally withdrawn from industrialized society, and teaches us that sometimes beauty and angels can be found in the most destitute hell."
